National Healthcare Corporation (NHC) has been operating nursing homes since 1971. They have over 100 facilities ranging from home care programs to their long-term care facilities. Their corporate office is out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
NHC has a total of over 130 facilities, 75 of which are long-term facilities in 11 different states. Tennessee has the majority of their nursing homes with 30 locations. They also have nursing homes in Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Virginia.
NHC is smaller than many of the nursing home chains, even with its 75 locations. Typically as chains get larger, you see their ratings within the Medicare system dwindle. NHC, being one of the smaller national chains has much better rankings then many of the large chains with some locations getting 3-star or above overall ratings. However, out of the 24 Tennessee Medicare program facilities, over half, 14, of NHC homes received a rating of 3 or below.
The majority of NHC facilities are dedicated to long-term care. They do also have other services in a smaller capacity:
- Home care programs
- Assisted Living
- Independent Living
One of the most notorious series of lawsuits surrounding NHC was in it’s own home state of Tennessee. It was alleged that the company allowed a serial sexual molester and abuser to stay in its employment at its Bristol nursing home for seven long years even though fellow employees, administration and residents had made countless complaints. Complaints started in 2000 and continued through 2007 when the employee finally resigned of his own accord.
