The nursing home I work in uses large "flusher" to spray out fecal matter even if the resident has C. Diff. Most of the time the only masks we have just cover the mouth and nose, that is if we have any at all and the gowns too thin to provide any protection. The "flusher" is in the soiled utility next to the sink we use to do denture care. How can this be allowed?

My 97 year old mother-in-law moved to a nursing home and within 3 weeks was dead from c def. Now they are asking us to pay $3,500 for her outstanding nursing home care. Her room was right next to the community toilet and shower room. Don't know where to turn or what to do.

Sorry to hear of your situation. You may wish to contact your state's department of health to conduct an investigation into this situation which may determine the origin of the c. diff. Also, depending on the circumstance you may want to speak to an attorney to help investigate if you have a civil claim for the negligence against the facility in terms of their sanitation practices and/or nursing care.
