Oklahomans Continue To Have One Of The Highest Rates Of Pressure Ulcers In The Country

A colleague forwarded me this video with Dr. Dale Bratzler of the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality as he discusses the prevalence of pressure ulcers amongst patients in nursing homes and hospitals in the state.  Unfortunately, Oklahoma is one of the top five worst states in terms of frequency of development of pressure ulcers. Dr. Bratzler suggests that the best method of prevention is to educate 'front line workers'-- those who typically provide the most hands-on patient care as to what can be done to from a prevention standpoint and how identify the wounds in their early stages before... Bed Sore Problems Compounded: Amyloidosis

One of the nursing home negligence cases my office is currently investigating involves the death of a man related to complications related to amyloidosis.  Turns out, the man was suffering from an advanced bed sore on his coccyx (also called pressure ulcers, pressure sores or decubitus ulcers) that had progressed so far that the bone in the area had become infected (osteomyelitis). Elderly nursing home residents, especially those suffering from other diseases such as bed sores, have a higher risk of developing amyloidosis, a disease which can damage various tissues and organs.  This can cause dangerous complications in residents... Video Demonstrates Proper Dressing Changes For Patients With Pressure Ulcers

In order to heal a pressure ulcer, staff at nursing homes, hospitals or wound clinics must pay extra attention to dressings on the wound. Too often, the problems associated with pressure ulcers are compounded when staff fail to follow physician orders with respect to the frequently of dressing changes or the dressings changes are not done properly. Dangerous Nursing Home Ordered To Close Following Discovery Of Conditions Posing 'Immediate Jepardy' To Its Residents

I was recently forwarded an articled from Indyweek.com, regarding the outrageously horrid conditions at Forest View Rehabilitation Center in Durham, North Carolina.  The article highlights multiple incidents of downright disgusting patient care and dangerous living conditions that resulted in authorities ordering the facility to shut its doors. Among the conditions documented by state nursing home inspectors in their investigations reveal the following: Failure to provide pain medication to residents with advanced pressure sores Sexual assaults committed on mentally disabled residents by other residents at the facility Fire ant bites on residents bodies Urinary tract infections- there is documentation that the... Improper Transfer Leads To Fall & Ultimately Death Of Rehab Patient

Even the best facilities occasionally provide bad treatment to their residents.  A wrongful death lawsuit has been recently filed against Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, a nationally recognized rehab center in Chicago on behalf of the family of a deceased resident.  The family carefully selected Schwab as a rehabilitation center for their loved one's physical therapy and rehab training following the amputation of a leg.  Unfortunately, even this well respected facility, failed to provide basic care for an elderly man's needs.  When the man was admitted to Schwab, the physicians ordered that the man be transferred in and out of his wheelchair... The Correlation Between Staff Satisfaction And Resident Care

It makes sense.  If members of the nursing home staff are satisfied with their job, treated appropriately, receive good job benefits, they will be happier and their happiness will likely be translated to better patient care.  On the other hand, look closely into the eyes of any employee at struggling company-- you can sense their stress, their frustration and their anger.  In this sense nursing home patients and staff have interests that are very much aligned with each other.  In nursing home owner's desire to squeeze every cent of profit out of their facility, nursing home staff and residents are...
