Nursing Home With History Of Problems Now Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuit Related To Poor Care of Patient With Tracheostomy Tube

We've spent a fair amount of time talking about nursing homes on Medicare's Special Focus Facility (SFF) list, which can be simply referred to as a compilation of the country's worst nursing homes.   As the name implies, nursing homes appointed to the SFF list faced heightened scrutiny with more frequent inspections due to a pattern of improper care and patient neglect. Assuming facilities improve the care they provide to their patients, they can graduate from the list.  For facilities not inclined to make the necessary changes, an uncertain future faces them as continued problems could result in cuts in... Investigation Into Nursing Home Resident's Death In Van Accident Begins

In some respects, nursing home patients are at a far greater risk for injury when they engage in non-traditional nursing home activities outside of the confines of the facility-- compared with the day-to-day care they typically receive in the course of their daily programs.  While nursing home employees may receive a good deal of training when it comes to day-to-day care of patients, in other aspects of patient care there maybe less emphasis on training--- and consequently an increased liklihood of patient injury. The transportation of patients into or out of the nursing home is indeed a crucial part of... More

Is It Time For Nursing Homes To Implement More Safety Measures To Protect Patients From Visitors?

Would you open your front door and simply welcome in any visitor?  I don't know where you live-- but I surely wouldn't!   However, many nursing homes pretty much have an 'open door' policy when it comes to granting visitors access to their facility.  Sure some facilities have a check-in desk where visitors can sign in and get an official looking sticker to put on their lapel, but rarely is there much more of a screening system in place to restrict access to these facilities. While the overwhelming majority of visitors indeed have very sincere intentions for their visit,... More

According to the lawyer representing the nursing home patient's family, the facilities poor charting was probably to blame for the man's morphine overdose.  "The document stuck out... More

Michigan Court Dismisses Charges Against Nursing Home Workers Playing With A Corpse

Criminal charges were dismissed against three employees at Cherrywood Nursing and Living Center in Sterling, Michigan.  The Michigan Court of Appeals dismissed the misdemeanor patient abuse charges that the employees were originally charged with.  The court reasoned that the deceased nursing home resident could not be categorized as a patient because she was dead.  In 2004, the nursing home employees were ordered to get the body of a deceased nursing home resident ready for transport to a funeral home.  The threesome told the corpse to 'wake up' and took photographs of each other with the corpse.
