Dialysis Related Injuries Can Be Prevented With Basic Precautions

When a person’s kidneys no longer work properly, dialysis can filter waste products from their blood.  Your kidneys keep your blood clean and balanced.  They filter 200 quarts of blood every day, filtering out waste and excess water, which becomes urine.  Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two most common causes of kidney disease.  As your kidney health declines, your renal function worsens.  If your kidneys have less than 25% of their kidney function, serious health problems can occur.  And, if your kidneys have less than 15% of their kidney function, dialysis or kidney transplant is required.  About 11.5%... Nursing Home Patients Continue To Receive Drugs Associated With Known Dangers

Through no fault of their own, many nursing home patients continue to receive medications known to potentially cause serious injury or death.  Many of these situations involve claims for damage against the drug manufacturers themselves.  In other cases, the prescribing physician may be partially responsible for failing to monitor the patient. MRI Danger: Gadolinium Liquid May Cause Severe Reactions Such As Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis In 1988 the FDA approved the use of Gadolinium for use as a contrast agent in MRI's. Contrast agents help in enhancing the clarity of MRI images. Gadolinium bonds with damaged or diseased tissues giving doctors... More

Medications Such As: Visocol, OsmoPrep, or Fleet Phoso-Soda May Cause Kidney Failure Or Death In The Elderly

On December 11, 2008, the FDA ordered the makers of Visicol and OsmoPrep to put a black box warning on their products alerting consumers to the fact that the drugs can cause kidney damage or... More

Dehydration Death Costs Nursing Home $6.5M

Sometimes I'm amazed by the number of preventable situations that develop in nursing homes due to a facilities failure to provide basic care.  I mean, doesn't it seem obvious that facilities must provide food, water and a decent environment for their residents?  Am I oversimplifying nursing home care?  Perhaps, but the reality is that an overwhelming majority of nursing home injuries and deaths could be avoided if the facility were to provide this basic level of care. The Columbus Dispatch reported on this type of preventable situation when it reported on the dehydration death of 61-year-old Peter Southard. ... More

Nursing Home Fined In Dehydration Death

California nursing home regulators have fined El Dorado Care Center $21,000 for violations that led to the death of 86-year-old resident Donald Forseth.  In 2006, Mr. Forseth died within four months of his admission to this nursing home from complications related to dehydration.  A complaint was filed against El Dorado Care Center by Foundation Aiding the Elderly, a patient advocacy group shortly after Mr. Forseth's death.  Almost two years after the report of nursing home neglect was made, the state Department of Health Services found that the facility failed to monitor the man's fluid intake, which led to severe dehydration,...
