Falling Like A Parachutist May Prevent Hip Fractures

Hip fractures are the most common type of fractures amongst people over 65.  Moreover hip fractures amongst the elderly require 320,000 hospitalizations.  How can the injuries associated with these falls be reduced? Researchers have determined that teaching seniors to fall like a parachutist may reduce their odds of sustaining a hip fracture by 70%.  Computer simulations have demonstrated that falling sideways (like a parachutist), instead of falling backwards, dissipates the force of a fall.  In order for the technique to be fully effective, it is important that the technique is implemented immediately once the person begins to fall.
