Improper Maintenance Of Lift Device Costs Nursing Home Patient Their Life

Inadequate maintenance of a lift is responsible for the death of a patient at Eskaton Care Center Manzanita (California).  The lift at issue is used to help staff transfer physically disabled patients into and out of their bed.  According to an investigation completed by the California Department of Health, the 60-year-old nursing home patient was being transported from a wheelchair to bed when the sling on the lifting device broke and causing the patient to fall to the floor and suffer a head injury which subsequently caused his death. The agency determined that the nursing home failed to perform the... More

California Nursing Home's Failure To Provide Fall-Prevention Safeguards Results In A Substantial Fine

Too little, too late-- best summarizes Pilgrim Haven Health Facility of Los Angeles, reaction to fall-prevention measures suggested by a patient's physician and the facility itself.  The omissions appear to be responsible for the fall-related death of an 85-year-old man and have initiated a substantial fine by the California Department of Health. Use Of Restraints Amongst Nursing Home Patients Has Been Reduced More Than 50% Over The Last Decade. Is It Enough?

When you consider forms of cruel treatment, maybe you consider beds of nails or solitary confinement? However, another form of cruel treatment-- the use of restraints, is commonly used with innocent nursing home patients. At some facilities, patient restraints are a commonly used tool used by facilities in lieu of providing actual hands-on patient care by facility staff. In the past, nursing homes used physical restraints such as: bed rails, lap belts, vests, wrist ties and special chairs to assist them in literally controlling their patients.  In addition to de-humanizing patients, the use of restraints was attributed to rapid physical... Nursing Home Operators May Be Responsible For Injuries Due To The Negligent Removal Of Snow & Ice

As winter weather sets in, the city is often covered in a blanket of snow and ice. Nursing home residents rely on the nursing home property owners (nursing home operators and manager) to provide a facility free of dangers that might cause dangerous falls or accidents. This responsibility includes the removal of snow and ice, which creates a... More

Even Common Falls Put Elderly At Risk For Developing Subdural Hematomas

Frequently undiagnosed and under-appreciated, falls amongst the elderly can frequently result in brain bleeds or technically termed 'subdural hamatoas'.   Because elderly are predisposed to developing subdural hamatomas, staff in nursing homes and hospitals need to be tuned into the symptoms and when to seek additional medical care. What is a subdural hematoma? A subdural hematoma is a type of intracranial bleeding (hemorrhage), caused by head injury.  Subdural hematomas occur when blood vessels burst in the space between the brain and the outermost membrane that covers the brain (dura mater).  The collection of blood forms a hematoma, which puts pressure...
