As we reported in a recent blog entry, thirty-two nursing homes made it onto the first-quarter 2009 “violator list” published by Illinois Department of Public Health (“IDPH”) in March. Today we shine a spotlight on one of those facilities: Clearbrook East. Clearbrook East is a 92-bed, non-profit nursing home facility, located at 3802 South Old Wilke Road in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, that serves adults with developmental disabilities. When Bruises Can't Speak For Themselves: The Difficulty Proving Abuse Of Disabled Nursing Home Residents
The News & Observer, had an article about the difficulty proving physical abuse in disabled nursing home residents who are unable to communicate any information about the act. The article focuses on an 88-year-old disabled woman who sustained bruises to her face(consistent with abuse) while a resident at Sunnybrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Raleigh, N.C. The woman suffered from advanced dementia and was unable to walk or roll over-- therefore bruising due to a fall could immediately be ruled out. $35 Million Lawsuit Filed Against Nursing Home Following Death Of Disabled Man
The family of a disabled man is suing the nursing home where he lived for multiple counts of negligence in connection with the man's death. 33-year-old Robert Young was a resident at Standifer Place (Tennessee) and required 24-hour care due to a brain injury he sustained as an infant. Last November, the facility rushed Young to a nursing home for reason's listed as a seizure. In reality Young sustained a skull fracture. Local police are investigating this matter as a homicide. Nurse's Aide Sentenced to 3 1/2 Years In Prison
A nurse's aide responsible for the home care of a 61-year-old Bensenville woman, was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for stealing. The nurse's aide stole at least $7,000 from the Chicago-area woman who suffered from disability related to polio and was dependent on a respirator to breath. According to the victim, her home care provider studied her sleep patterns and noise levels to steal from her when she was in a deep sleep. Read more about this incident here....
