Nursing Home Abuse: Facilty Allows Patient To Fall 45 Times!

When I first saw a recent news report about a Canadian nursing home patient that fell 45 times over a six-month period, I began to question my reading skills as the number seemed to be downright shocking!  As it turns out, my eyes are indeed in good order as are the journalistic skills of the Canadian reporter who prepared the story. Hidden camera footage captured the man, who is afflicted with Parkinson's and Dementia, repeatedly falling at the nursing home where he was living.  In addition to the alarming pattern of falls, the videotape confirming abusive behavior on the part... New York Nursing Home Workers Removed After Abusing Disabled Patients

It always surprises me how many people wind up working in jobs that they are completely unsuited for!  While many of these people may later gravitate towards jobs that may be a better fit, it usually does come with any harm to people.  Not in the case of two women have been removed from their position at Northgate Health Care Facility (NY).  Nursing assistant Alicia Clemens and her co-worker Gloria Maxwell were both removed from their position at the nursing home and similarly banned from working in other nursing homes by the New York State Health Department. Their... More

When Safety Is An Afterthought, Smoking Is One Of The Most Dangerous Nursing Home Activities

Smoking remains one of the most ordinary--- yet perhaps the most dangerous activities that takes place in nursing homes everyday.  Maybe its due to the fact that smoking is such a commonplace activity in nursing homes, many staff simply fail to understand its potentially dangerous impact on both the individual smoker--- as well as the overall safety of all patients and staff at the facility. The fact remains, hundreds of thousands of nursing home patients smoke cigarettes on a regular basis.  As such, nursing homes need to both create and implement a smoking safety policy to minimize the chance of... Nursing Home Abuse: Workers' Prank In Applying Grease To Dementia Patients In California Results In Criminal Charges

A demented sense of humor amongst nursing home workers at Valley View Skilled Nursing Facility seems to have backfired-- and has landed a group of them jobless and facing criminal charges.  The fallout stems from an incident in which four employees at the California nursing home, covered dementia patients at the facility with lubricant from head to toe, making the patients slippery for staff on the next shift to handle.  In the wake of the incident and following investigations from the nursing homes parent company, Horizon West Healthcare and the California Attorney General's Bureau of Elder Abuse, it was determined... State Steps In After Second Episode Involving Patient Elopmement At Same Facility

I think its downright scary when facilities fail to learn from their mistakes.  Of course, --- any person, --- any facility can make a mistake one time, but when the same errors are repeatedly made I feel there is well deserved cause for concern. An episode of a patient wandering from Brentwood Assisted Living facility, would normally not be a particularly noteworthy event--- especially since the eloping woman will hopefully recover from her injuries.  What deservedly brings more attention to this incident is the fact that this was the second patient to wander from this facility this year! In the... More

CNA Charged With The Rape Of An Elderly Woman In An Assisted Living Facility

Douglas McGregor, a CNA at an assisted living facility for dementia and Alzheimer's patients, stands accused of raping a 71-year-old woman with whom he was to assist in dressing.  According McGregor, the elderly woman was 'tugging' on his waist line and the button on his pants broke, thereby exposing his genitals because he wasn't wearing any underwear. The incident, which is to allegedly have occurred on February 17th at Weatherly Inn at Lake Meridian, is currently under investigation by officials at the Washington Department of Health.  Nurse McGregor is in custody at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice and is scheduled... Nursing Home Operator And CNA's Named As Defendants In Civil Lawsuit After Sex Abuse Scandal

After the well publicized abuse of elderly patients at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Minnesota, some of the patients who were victimized have filed a civil lawsuit against the nursing home and the individual nurses involved.  Prosecutors have already filed criminal charges against two young woman who tormented many of the Alzheimer's and dementia patients they were responsible for caring for.  The criminal investigation revealed that these derelict CNA's were repeatedly abusing Good Samaritan patients over a six month period in 2008. While employers are generally not responsible for the intentional acts of their employees, lawyers for the nursing... More

Would you want this man to care for your granny at the nursing home?

Sure looks can be deceiving, but this guy sure looks creepy to me! The guy pictured above is Franklin D. Hughes, a former CNA at Bartlesville Care Center.  If his creepy looks weren't enough, Mr. Hughes stands accused of sexually assaulting two dementia patients he was responsible for caring for at Bartlesville. Making situation even more tragic is that Mr. Hughes was was accused of committing similar sexual acts with dementia patients at his prior job at the Nowata Nursing Center.   According to a court affidavit, the patients at Nowata filed complaints with the Oklahoma State Department of... LaSalle County Nursing Home Cited For Failing To Protect Residents From Sex Abuse

After a full investigation into the sexual abuse of ten residents at LaSalle County Nursing Home, the Illinois Department of Health has determined the facility failed to take preventative measures to protect its residents.  The acts were initiated by a male resident who targeted non-verbal, dementia patients. IDPH investigators determined the perpetrator started abusing residents on Christmas Eve, but the facility failed to implement measures to stop further abuse from occurring.  A 61-page IDPH survey concerning the incidents at LaSalle County Nursing Home concluded, "Due to the administrative staff's failure to implement policies and procedures for abuse, failure to recognize... Did The National Enquirer Exploit Brook Shield's Mother?

Anything for a story. Right? Recent reports have surfaced regarding reporters 'signing out' Brooke Sheild's mother (who suffers from dementia) from an assisted living facility in New Jersey are disturbing-- to say the least.  The reporters were apparently from The National Enquirer and signed out 75-year-old Teri Shields to get a story for their tabloid. Who can blame Brooke for being upset? I intend to take every lawful action against all who were involved or who authorized this despicable act. My mother Teri Shields has been diagnosed with dementia. For her safety, she has temporarily been in a senior... More
