Nursing Home Patients Transported In Vehicles Are At Risk For Injury When Safety Is An Afterthought

Today, we are seeing many nursing homes and assisted living facilities expanding their services to accommodate the desires of today's consumers.  Hair salons, gyms, ice cream parlors and regular outings to theatre, restaurants and malls-- have become the norm at many facilities.  With the increase in services provided to residents, comes increased responsibilities on the part of facilities to ensure the safety of their residents. Particularly when it comes to the transportation of nursing home patients in buses or vans operated by the facility, I am seeing a trend of more patients getting injured due to inadequate training of staff... Wheelchair-Bound Nursing Home Patients Must Be Properly Supervised To Avoid Injury

Allowing a nursing home patient to sit comfortably in their wheelchair in a hall or perhaps in an outdoor area of the facility seems like a pretty innocent act-- right?  I mean aren't patients in wheelchairs entitled to a little fresh air or just hang out in an common area with other patients? Wrestling Legend Takes Moves To Minnesota Nurisng Home

Wrestling legend Verne Gagne, a former professional wrestler, still has some of his moves that made for a successful career in college wrestling, professional wrestling and professional football.  Unfortunately, the wrestling moves have no place in an Alzheimer's unit at Friendship Village Nursing Home.  Recently, Gagne threw down his roommate, Helmut Gutman, resulting in a broken leg and closed-closed head injury.  Several days later, Gutman died from complications related to his injuries. This incident demonstrates the necessity of nursing home staff to closely monitor Alzheimer's and dementia patients and potentially intervene if the residents pose harm to themselves or others. ...
